Nathalie Samain
Nathalie Samain was born in Kortrijk in 1984 and lives partly in Ghent, partly in Brussels. During her studies of graphic design at Luca School of Arts in Ghent, the photographic aspect in her work seemed to play a very big role. That is why, after she graduated, she studied photography at Luca Brussels where she developed a passion for fashion photography and portraiture.
After being a photographer assistant, she started to work as a freelance photographer. Working as a professional photographer means she is constantly trying to improve the quality and content of her work, which is often commercial, but also sometimes more personal. A subject is shot with the aim of showing the best part, the strength of it, go to the core, often resulting in pictures with a natural feeling and yet at the same time not showing more than absolutely necessary. Nathalie is not afraid of showing a more fragile part of the subject, approaching it with a more feminine touch.
A lot of inspiration comes from the locations, which explains her constant search for new places that create a specific atmosphere and that trigger her. The creative process always starts from an idea, an atmosphere, a space that she then combines with the personality of the person she is shooting, the style of the brand she works for or the special features of a certain object...
The subject, light, colors, atmosphere and location … all these elements have to create a certain unity.
Apart from working on commercial projects, Nathalie also organizes exhibitions of her personal work such as the recent exhibition where she showed portraits of young women wearing the wedding dress of their mother.
Nathalie’s work has been published in De Standaard Magazine, Herschel Well Travelled, Metro, INCH Magazine, DeFuze Magazine, La Maison Victor...
